Portrait of Alicia Galant 1927 Frida Kahlo

When Frida Kahlo started tinting, she painted abundant portraits of her close friends and descendants. This lacquer is one of those and represents her friend Alicia Galant. This image is stained in the style of a 16th century Italian Renaissance reflection. Frida admires Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio and was following their tastes in portraiture when she painted this one. It could also be inspired by Bronzino’s painting “Eleonora di Toledo” with the woman posed aristocratically and the background is dark and gloomy. This illustration shows signs of the Art Nouveau style that was popular at the time.
