On June 29, 2020, Sotheby’s held an auction that included one of the last paintings Frida Kahlo painted. The small work, which she completed while confined to her bed, was her contribution to the People’s Congress for Peace held in Vienna in 1952. Sotheby’s estimated that “People’s Congress for Peace” would sell for between $400,000 and $600,000. It sold for more than two million dollars above the highest estimate: the deck was reduced to $2,660,000, a staggering price for a work that, by consensus, is less in the artist’s work.
