Self Portrait Dedicated to Dr Eloesser 1940 Frida Kahlo

In gratitude for the treatment that stabilized his condition for recurring back pain and an infection in his hand in late 1939, Frida painted this self-portrait for him. The earrings that she wears were a gift from Pablo Picasso, whom she met while in Paris. The necklace of thorns around her neck is a reminder of the pain Dr. Eloesser delivered her from. When he died in 1976, she bequeathed this painting to her partner of many years, Joyce Campbell. She never liked the painting and she sold it shortly after receiving it.
